Asamma never thought that traveling to Egypt to work as a maid would take such a toll on her body. After saving enough money to travel, she embarked on her journey to a place she knew so little about. When she arrived, the agency had arranged for her to work for a wealthy family. At first, everything was great and she felt fulfilled and rewarded for the work she was doing.
However, the hours became increasingly longer, and the pay started to decrease. To make matters worse, the environment was unhygienic and the family seemed to take advantage of her. Asamma had to resort to eating meager amounts of food that was often stale and even days without water or adequate sleep. Her body quickly started deteriorating, as the workload had become so intense she could no longer keep up with the expectations of her employers.
With no friends or family nearby to offer help, Asamma became very ill and she was eventually
forced to return home to Ghana. Thankfully, after taking some time off, her body started to slowly recover. Asamma shared her story to educate and raise awareness of the plight of many maids who often face harsh conditions while away from home. Despite her ordeal, Asamma knows her experience won’t keep her from going abroad to seek a better life again someday.
