SIM Card Re-registration Exercise; Bad News Finally Dropped As Deadline Nears, Sunday is the last day

With deadline looming for all Mobile subscribers to link their Ghana Card to their SIM to complete the re-registration exercise, only 14,102,670 people have actually completed the re-registration exercise out of a total Mobile Subscribers of 41,685,575.

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation has already warned that it will not extend the deadline for the re-registration of SIM cards across the country when it ends on 31st July, 2022.

The exercise was originally scheduled to end on 31st March, 2022 but was extended.

Delivering the Mid-Year Budget review this week, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta indicated that the National SIM Card Re-registration process commenced on 1st October, 2021, less than 50% of the taret has been achieved in terms of capturing.

“Out of a total number of 41,685,575 mobile subscriptions, 23,184,601 SIM cards were successfully linked to the Ghana Card of which 14,102,670 completed the re-registration as at 29th June, 2022.”

Earlier, the National Identification Authority (NIA) said the backlog of unprinted cards, uncollected cards and multi-applications, warrants an extension of the deadline of the SIM re-registration exercise which led to a 3-month extension.

The Head of Administration and Human Resources at the NIA, Cecilia Erzuah believes the extension should be to the end of the year but Communication Minister Ursula Owusu says not again.
